How to Take the Work Out of Work
If there’s one thing that held me back for the longest time, it’s that I’m relatively lazy. As you can imagine, this can be quite a problem when trying to start a business
. When you’re working for yourself, getting yourself to do what you know needs to be done instead of surfing the net can be a challenge. I could make myself work on something, but after a while (say a week or two), it was just really hard to keep doing everything that needed doing when the TV had so much quality content on it
.
Now I’m not really that lazy. I’ve got a graduate degree, have worked 50-60 hour weeks for years, but for the life of me, some parts of internet marketing I just could not do. Not that I didn’t have the knowledge or technical skill, I just couldn’t bring myself to do them. I remember sitting on the couch and trying to write articles about weight gain supplements and failing. I’ve written thousands of pages in my life on everything from Aphids to Zoroastrianism, but couldn’t come up with 400 words on about weight gain supplements, lol.
The point is, I got hung up on one part of the business that I wasn’t as skilled at, content creation, and I ended up just dropping content websites for like 2 years. I wanted to do everything in my business because I was afraid of hiring someone, even though I knew it was what my business needed, and it held me back literally for years. The thought that you can and should be doing everything in your business, for most of us, is a myth. You can’t be good at everything that needs to happen, and some tasks are frankly more important than others. At the very least you should have a friend or one of your kids helping out (I didn’t have the kids option, but my wife helps with the business now).
The best thing that you can do to take the work out of working, all of the annoying “I just can’t make myself do this!” parts of internet marketing, is to pay someone else to do these things for you. This is such a better use of your money than buying ebooks! This is as true of things that you only have to do once as it is of things that need doing over and over.
If you just need someone to do a one time project for you, like design a website, you can find hundreds of people willing to work for pennies on the dollar at sites like Rent-A-Coder.com or Guru.com. Like anything else though, you get a better deal with volume. If you have things that need doing again and again, or even just several sites you want created, then you’re probably better off hiring someone full time.
The reason many people are resistant to this idea is that they reason that they can just do everything themselves for free. That seems like the most prudent course financially, after all. What’s wrong with that is that your time isn’t free! How much do you think your time spent in internet marketing is worth? How much would you like it to be worth? Mine time is worth around $75 an hour (I spend about 14 hours a week working and make about $1000 a week). That means that if I have tasks I’ve got to do, so long as I can get someone to do them for me at $74 an hour (at the same speed as I could do it), I can refocus my time on promotion to make another $75 and I’m coming out ahead!
The good news is that you can hire someone for as little as $1.25 an hour to do most “boring” internet marketing tasks like SEO, making blog posts, etc. I pay my best guys, who are PHP programmers, website designers, and graphic artists around $2.50 an hour, but I’ve also got people I pay much less (and this is by their request!). They can also get certain things done way faster than I can, like doing the layout or graphics on a website (I’m pretty bad at graphic design), so it’s an even better deal when put in terms of how much time I’m saving.
Is your time worth at least $3 an hour? If you had all of the “boring” parts of your business handled by someone else, what would that do for the quality of your life? Would that give you enough time or enough of an advantage to start living your dream?
I recently did an interview with the guy who first taught me how to do this: John Jonas. John runs a program that helps people both hire and train low cost workers from overseas called ReplaceMyself. I think he’s made something like 2 million dollars using this strategy, and he graciously shared some of his best material with us during the interview. Check it out here:
http://davesimclub.com/interview-with-john-jonas/
I’ve been using this strategy for a while now, and it’s freed me up like I never thought possible, and taken my business to new heights. Take advantage of John’s totally free training in this interview!
Interview with John Jonas
Every now and then, I look back at my life and think “How did I get here? Why am I so fortunate?” A chance to interview a great guy like John is a real treat for me, because I credit him for a fair portion of that (obviously God gets some credit too). John is the guy that’s behind the success of marketers like Jeff Mills and myself, as he runs a website that allows us to find full time, skilled, American English speaking help for about what your neighbor gives his kids for allowance.
If you watched the webinar Jeff and I did earlier (here), then this is going to make a lot of sense to you, and hopefully show you the next direction to go in. Check it out:

Some Frank Advice…
I pride myself on trying to tell the truth even when it’s not in my own best interests. I figure the big guy upstairs will take care of me
. I feel like this is one of those times, because what I’m about to say will probably offend some of you. Basically, many of you reading this are going to fail, but the reason you’ll fail won’t be a lack of technical skill or marketing knowledge. The reason many of you will fail is that you don’t have the guts to succeed.
I know this because a lack of courage to actually implement the great ideas I had was one of the things that has held my success back by at least a year, maybe more like a year and a half. Getting over my fear was one of the turning points for me.
Let me give you an example: I came up with a detailed plan on how to outsource the production of niche blogs almost 2 years ago. I drew up job descriptions, wrote articles, signed up for affiliate programs, did research, got an Adsense account, but never really got off the ground. From what I know now (I’m currently running almost the exact same business), I think that I’m around $40,000 poorer today because I didn’t have the stomach to take the next step then.
What was my next step? At the time, it was hiring people to do different parts of this business. I hated writing articles about the niches I was in and needed someone else to do that and the SEO. But I didn’t want to eat into my savings, so I just floundered, getting stuck on tasks I didn’t want to do instead of focusing on my bottom line. I let fear control me and keep me from taking what I knew to be the correct next step to reach my dream (in my defense I was unemployed at the time, so money was a sensitive issue). Eventually I just moved onto something else. Sound familiar?
Are you serious about making money online? You’ll need to be to succeed. If you’re not willing to set aside real money in your budget to pursue your dream of financial and personal freedom, I question if you are. Maybe you should just give this whole internet marketing thing up and at least save yourself the time. You’ve got to make the decision, though: is this dream worth pursing and worth risking your time and money? Is it more valuable to you than eating out or going to the movies for the next year? Since you’re reading this blog, you’ve decided it’s worth your time, but to make it, you’re going to have to do more than read blog posts and free ebooks. You’re going to have to carefully plan your correct next step and take it. Then do that again and again until you’re where you need to be!
If you know what your next step should be, but just want a sounding board or some support taking it, check out the follow up post (here) and leave your comments. Being in a community of folks going through the same thing can really help!
The biggest secret to the success of every affiliate marketer I know
is… you can probably guess it:
.
.
.
.
.
.
… their list.
You probably already know why list building works: you get to market to one group of people again and again, it’s a constant source of traffic, and you get to build relationships and have people tell you what they’re interested in buying. So I’m not going to bore you trying to convince you that list building is the greatest thing since Google, I’m just telling you what I know from my experience and the experiences of the marketers I know: having a list is the most reliable path to long term wealth online.
Instead of belaboring this point, I thought I’d try to answer the question that many of you are struggling with: What’s the fastest and easiest way to build a list?
The answer to this is different for everyone, because it depends what you already have going for you. If you already have a small list then hands down the best way to go is adswapping; you can turn a 500 member list into a 5000 member list in as little as 2 months that way; I know numerous people with stories like this (a lot of them are my adswap partners).
But if you don’t have a list yet, there’re still plenty of other things that you can leverage into a sizeable list quickly. Do you have a product that’s making sales? Put an optin form just before the shopping cart (make it look like part of the checkout process – like this; click order) and let your affiliates build your list. If nothing else, you should be capturing these people to try to close them again; as many as 90% of people who enter your shopping cart will leave without purchasing.
Do you have a blog or website that’s getting good traffic? Add an incentivized optin, like a free report or coupon code, to the site, like the “Free List Building Videos” tab on top of this blog (I’ve been told footer pop-ups work great too).
Even if all you have is time, you can leverage that to write tons of articles for ezinearticles.com and build a list by sending people to a squeeze page. Or if all you have is cash, the fastest way to build a list might be to buy ads or mailings to promote your squeeze page. All of these work, but the best strategy for you depends on what your situation is.
Let’s talk about squeeze pages, since that’s a fairly important part of building your list. A squeeze page, in case you’re wondering, is a page where someone has only 2 choices, enter their email for a free gift of some kind, or leave the page. You may already have one up and running, but you’re not seeing the results you’d like. People will tell you a lot about how split testing and the right graphics can double or triple your squeeze page results, but from my experience, the most important part of your optin efforts is the perceived value of what you’re giving away! A squeeze page doesn’t have to be glitzy or cost $200 to make; ugly sites often work better than professional looking ones. How the site looks or the colors you use, etc, don’t matter a third as much as what you’re giving away! Think about it; when you give someone your email address, is it because their optin form is just where it should be, or is it because they’re offering something you really want? A successful squeeze page boils down to whether or not you’re connecting with what people want. If you’re giving them a great reason to give you an email address, you’ll get it!
Let me give you an example. A while ago, back when participating in JV giveaway events was still something I would recommend for building your list, I put together a giveaway that was just a bunch of crappy old MRR products with a new ecover graphic, but it was a lot of them. Most people were giving away the same stuff, but only 1 or 2 of them; I was giving away over 100. I had an absolutely crappy looking squeeze page (so ugly I quit using it from embarrassment), never split tested it or anything, but still got around 75% conversions from giveaway traffic! Why? Because the perceived value of what I was giving away was way over the perceived value of what other people were giving away. I got something like 403 optins from one event, which was great!
So what do you do to get a killer product to giveaway, something that people will salivate over? I cover this topic pretty thoroughly in my Part-Time List Building Videos on the Sales Funnel Fundamentals about 5 and a half minutes in, as well as a lot of other strategies for list building, so check that out if you haven’t yet:
http://www.parttimelistbuilding.com/thankyou.php
Also, if you don’t already have a list, but you’re interested in getting one, you’re going to need an autoresponder service. I use and recommend Aweber (although GetResponse has a limited free version). Grab Aweber here:

How to get started online as quickly as possible
Over the next few weeks I’m going to try to teach you almost everything you need to know about the key skills you really need in order to start your own online business. There are a lot of pitfalls in learning to make money online, but most of them are internal rather than external. More people fail because they don’t take action or don’t know the right action to take than because Google deindexed their site or changed their rules. So today I want to give you a step by step action plan to follow if you’re just getting started. Without further ado:
Step 1, Beginner’s track: figure out how you want to make money online.
There are only 20 million ways to make money on the internet
, and most of the ones that take effort also work. Some of my favorites are affiliate marketing, article marketing, CPA (cost per action), PPC (pay per click), making info products, membership sites, blogging and list building. All of these are great ways to make money online, it just depends on what appeals to you. I’ve listed some pros and cons with each strategy in a blog post, just in case this is all new to you:
http://davesimclub.com/pros-and-cons-of-the-best-internet-marketing-strategies/
Step 2, Intermediate track: learn how to implement of your chosen strategy.
You’re going to have to learn everything you can about this specific way to make money, and limit yourself to just learning about things related to this subject. There are certain skills that are necessary for almost anything online, like keyword research, writing, and basic computer skills, but there are also a whole raft of other skills that are specific to each strat. You have to figure out what these skills are and then learn them to the point where you’re “good enough”. Once you’re “good enough”, it’s time to start. You can pick up the advanced tips as you go, and they might not even make sense to you until you’ve got some experience anyway.
I’ve included a link to an implementation guide for each strategy (in the form of an ebook or video) on the blog page I just mentioned:
http://davesimclub.com/pros-and-cons-of-the-best-internet-marketing-strategies/
Learning how to implement your strat means figuring out its ins and outs. What skills am I going to need? What are the pieces that need to come together in order for me to make money? How hard is this going to be relative to what I’ve got at hand? Those are the questions you need to be able to answer at this stage.
Step 3, Advanced track: make a business plan and implement it.
Patton once said, “No plan survives contact with the enemy,” and that’s a good thing to keep in mind. Your plan may change as you learn more about your niche or your strategy, and that’s ok.
Every one of the strategies I mentioned (list building, blogging, article marketing, etc) has 100s of variations, and some work better than others. If you’re article marketing, are you going to use goarticles.com or ezinearticles.com? If you’re list building, are you going to promote directly to your list or build a relationship with them first? If you’re blogging, how are you going to drive traffic and monetize it? The questions you need to answer here are the details, like how many articles do I need to submit, which affiliate program am I going to promote, what exactly do I need that I don’t already have, like an autoresponder service, hosting, specialized software, etc? What can I outsource? (I’m going to give you some killer tips on how to outsource correctly in future posts, by the way).
To help you get an idea of what I mean by a business plan, I posted an example plan for article marketing on my blog here:
http://davesimclub.com/how-to-write-a-business-plan/
Once you have your plan, to implement it, make a timeline and figure out exactly what to do when. Figure out how you’re going to fit this into your existing life.
Some tips about following your plan that I’d like to share:
Work when you have energy. For me this means getting up early rather than staying up late to work on my business. Watch how much alcohol you drink, exercise, watch what you eat. These things will increase your energy.
Stay motivated. Whatever your dream is, to work from home, to free yourself from debt, to quit your job or earn the respect of someone, keep that in your mind every day. Have faith your plan is wise and is going to work (I’m assuming that it will be wise; making money online is not that difficult provided that you take action consistently and that you make an effort to figure out what’s going wrong if you’re not getting the results you think you should with the effort you’re putting in).
Stay focused. You need two things, a list of action items for your business (sign up for this, write that, etc) and at least one hour of uninterrupted time to work on those action items. The point of the list is every bit as much to exclude items that aren’t on it as it is to do the items that are. I know that sounds odd, but this is that focused work I was talking about in the last post. If an action is not on your list, like reading a blog, then it’s not to be done during this time. Read my blog once you’re done with your hour
.
If finding one hour of focused time sounds impossible to you, I’m sorry, but 1 hour of focused uninterrupted time is far better than 3 hours of time with the kids nagging you or the phone ringing off the hook. Go to Starbucks or McDonalds if you have to, or a friend’s house, but make this happen (and I’m being nice; 2 hours is preferred) as a regular part of your life. Again, getting up early is what worked for me.
Be consistent. If you commit to one hour a day of focused time, the things that you’ve got to do will gradually go down until you’re where you need to be. This is how you get anything in life done, be it learn the guitar, build a healthy marriage, or start a home based business. You just need faith in your plan and you’ll hit 100 hours and a part time income in about 3 months!
Step 4, Owner’s track: Track and Improve.
Once you’re making money with your business, it’s time to hire people to do the work for you if you haven’t already, train them and free yourself from the “work” of the business, so that you can learn how to improve your results. This is when things like split testing, conversion tracking and learning new strategies become relevant. Until you hit this stage, taking time to split test and learn new strategies can actually be counterproductive.

Quit Buying $77 Ebooks (and how to get all the same content for pennies)
Quit buying expensive ebooks. I’ll bet you’ve never heard that from an internet marketer before, have you? Usually it’s “This is such a great deal, buy now, buy buy BUY!” But if you’re just starting out and not making a ton of money, you really should quit wasting your time chasing the next great idea and improve what you’re already doing.
I’ve bought a lot of ebooks in my day, and still do, but less so. My first year in internet marketing, I tallied it up (so that I could put it on my taxes) and I had spent over $2,300 on “business education”. This and all I had made at that point was like 2 $87 sales. Thank goodness I wasn’t married at the time, or I would have had a hard time explaining that to my wife
! I felt like a moron, but at least I got a huge rebate that year…
And then I did something that made me feel really stupid. I paid $77 for this ebook about how to “Get Google Ads Free”. Have you ever seen that sales page? Basically the idea is that you sell ads on the page you’re sending traffic to to offset your PPC costs (there, just saved you $77). I was unhappy enough that the trick was so simple, but then a couple of months later, I saw another product with a similar name by another guy. Same content, but in video form, and with MRR (that’s Master Resell Rights, if you didn’t know). The only difference was I didn’t pay much of anything for this content.
Now that I’ve been around the block a bit, I’ve noticed this pattern with some degree of regularity from Clickbank ebooks. The vast majority teach nothing new, and even if they do, the ideas in them typically will filter down in the form of other people’s ebooks, content, etc. (I’ll explain more about how to get products like this for next to nothing later in the email, but first I want to finish making my case against buying hyped up expensive ebooks.) The fundamentals of IM (Internet Marketing) haven’t changed, and they’re not likely to, yet you’ll see “wonder-solutions” sold all the time like they’re the cure for cancer, or at least poverty. Why is this?
There’s something I call the product cycle that’s responsible. Most IM products do a large majority of their sales around the time they launch (from affiliate and JV traffic), then peter off after a few weeks. Not all products are like this, but a lot of the hyped-up ones are. The result is that a lot of the same info gets passed around in each product. It’s good info, don’t get me wrong, but once you’ve bought one ebook on how to build a blog you’ve more or less bought them all. Quit wasting your time trying to find that “one tip” that’s going to make your business profitable. It doesn’t work like that. The problem is more likely insufficient or incorrect action on things like SEO, traffic, split testing, etc than some secret the sales copy talked about.
Now I’m not saying never buy anything on listing building or blogging or SEO or whatever. I’m just saying that most of what you think you’re going to learn in the latest ebook is stuff you either already know or could get free or much cheaper elsewhere. And if you wouldn’t have a clue what to do about article marketing, authority wheels, link building, opt in forms, how to drive traffic, etc, yeah, you probably need to do some more learning. But my philosophy is that you ought to be spending the majority of your time on things that enhance your bottom line, and most of your money on services, things like hosting, an autoresponder, employees, etc. Things that facilitate action rather than make you second guess your business strategy before it’s even off the ground.
If think you still have learning to do, you can get a great education for less than one cent a product. Not all products like this are created equally, and you do want to make sure that if what you’re studying is say, SEO rather than copywriting, that the book is somewhat up to date, but there are plenty of super high quality products out there on virtually any internet marketing related topic that can teach you the basics to advanced level stuff.
One of the best repositories of products like this is a site called the Ultimate Net Marketing Pack. I run it, so know that the following is a shameless plug
. You can access 1000s of detailed plans on how to make money at once instead of paying $77 each. It’s not like there’s some big secret to making money online; there are only so many ways to say “do market research, write content that connects, drive traffic, build a list and here’s how”. Of course there’s a lot more on there than ebooks; well over 3500 products: 150k+ PLR articles, 600+ software titles, tons of websites, videos, audios and more; over 50 gigs of content with something new added at least once a day. Check it out:

The #1 Missing Peice for Beginning Marketers
Ever bought an ebook or downloaded a free one, been really impressed with the content, but not have any idea what to do next? How do I set up my domain name? Where do I hire someone to design the site, or sign up for an Adwords account? This stuff seems simple to the guy writing the ebook, but not to you. The fact is, you need to know this stuff and if there is one thing that most frequently trips people up after reading those $77 “guru” ebooks, it’s this. This is probably the number one “missing link” for starting marketers.
I’m not going to try to teach you what FTP means in this post, or how to set up a website, because that would take way too long. If that sort of thing (SSH, FTP, DNS, etc) is a mystery to you, you have two options: either learn it soon or hire someone who knows what they’re doing full time, because when things break someone needs to be there to fix them quickly. The latter isn’t as hard (or expensive) as you think, but I’m still of the opinion that you should know how to run your business, even if you’ve got a gang of full time contractors. It helps to know what’s possible when trying to make the right decisions for your business.
This is something that took me a long time; after all it’s not like they covered HTML or setting up DNS in seminary. I’m pretty good with this sort of stuff now, but how did I get there? Mostly just trial and error with my websites, time spent on support calls, and hours of searching on Google (as always, Google is your friend). I think it took me like 2 days to figure out how to set up my first domain correctly. What a pain that was
.
If this is an area where you need help, I would suggest that you fix that fast. I don’t recommend the school of hard knocks here; I wasted weeks of time figuring this stuff out myself when I should have been focusing on the things that make me money, like marketing, copywriting, SEO, etc. It was a huge, needless obstacle to my (eventual) success. As a side note, if most of your time is spent on technical stuff like tweaking your website (I don’t mean split testing), you need to change the way you manage your time, or outsource the technical stuff.
You just need to find a way to learn that teaches you exactly what you need to know when you need to know it. I’m going to recommend a video based club that’s got a two week free trial (after you get a free DVD shipped to you). It’s called Point and Click Coaching, and it’s built especially for people who are new to the technical stuff:
Lee is one of my oldest business partners and his content is great. The unique thing about this program is that while it teaches you to make money online, it holds you by the hand and shows you exactly how to do things as you go, step by step with all the basics.
Very little of the technical stuff is that hard, just time consuming to figure out at first. But you’re better off learning this now rather than later; don’t put it off, and don’t let discomfort with technology keep you from pursuing your dream lifestyle! You can have that dream, but only if you take action! Click below and try out Lee’s program:
This is great material even if you’re a seasoned marketer, since the entry way to the club offers a course Lee was planning to sell for $1,997. That’s not marketing BS; he told me about this program a couple of months before the release and said it was going to be 2k. I was shocked when he said he was giving it away on the front end of this club! (by the way, in case you’re new to this, “free” DVDs usually have a small, as in barely over cost, shipping and handling fee associated with them) Check it out!
2 Essential Steps for Making Money Online
Succeeding in Internet Marketing means making a plan then ruthlessly taking the next step in that plan until you’re where you want to be.
It takes a lot of faith and hard work to succeed in this business, and anyone who tells you different is trying to sell you something. You know by now that I don’t advocate spending a lot of money on information once you know enough to get started, but besides the hard work thing (and I’ll cover some amazing tips to help you there in a couple of days), there are certain nearly universal next steps that marketers need to take to make money online.
You can have the best info in the world, but before you can take advantage of any of it, you have got to have 2 things: the ability to take action, and the right support. By support I mean services like hosting, registrar, autoresponder, advice, outsourcing, etc.
In the rest of this post I want to talk about support; stay tuned for a great video blog post about how to consistently take action in a couple of days though.
For list building in particular, which I think is the most desirable way to make money online for a variety of reasons you probably already know (not google dependant, asset you’ve got for years, etc), there are two services that are essential: professional hosting and an autoresponder service. If you don’t have both of these, that’s probably your next step (unless you don’t know what those are… in which case head over to UNMP grab a membership and start your education).
Hosting is cheap, but you really want to be careful about your choice of hosting company. There are three things I’d watch out for: first, a lot of companies pull the old bait and switch; they tell you that their hosting is $6 a month, but you have to buy 3 years at a time to get that price, so it really ends up being $200. The second thing to worry about is longevity; a lot of hosting companies are fly by night, and will go out of business without warning. I’ve got some horror stories about that one… The third thing to watch out for is domain ownership; don’t let a hosting company give you a domain for “free,” unless you want a throwaway domain, because your chances of getting it back from them if you ever leave are very low (even with well known companies like GoDaddy or 1and1). For these reasons I recommend HostGator; they’ve been around forever, a lot of internet marketers use them, and they’re honest about their prices. I’ve got a HostGator account myself, and $8 a month is really $8 a month, once a month. If you don’t already have hosting, that should be your next step. Get it free for a month here (use coupon code “garfield”):
http://bit.ly/GetHostGatorNow (yes, I make money if you sign up through this link)
The other thing you need to build a list is an autoresponder service. I’ve tried free options, and with one exception, they don’t really work too well. There are a ton of programs out there with autoresponder software built into them, but some of these aren’t compliant with the CAN SPAM act and they don’t have the knack of getting through the spam filters like services such as Aweber and GetResponse do.
The only free (but limited) service that I could endorse is GetResponse. This might be a good place to start if you don’t have a list yet. Here’s the link:
Overall though, I really recommend Aweber. It’s what I’ve used since I started this over 2 years ago. They’re the only provider I know of that allow you to use advanced tactics to double your conversion rates, split test emails, even the times of day that your list is most likely to respond. The only down side is that they charge an arm and a leg once you get above 10k members, lol. But by then money should be no obstacle.
If you don’t have an autoresponder service yet, build your website/product/etc first, but then sign up for one! Here’s the link to Aweber (you can import your list from GetResponse if you want to):
http://bit.ly/GoToAweber (disclaimer – again, I make money from this link if you sign up, but I also use Aweber every day and wouldn’t recommend another service for serious marketers)
If you need help on how to use it, check out my free list building videos.

The Secret to Always Taking Action

The tip I’m about to share with you has literally been a game changer for me… It’s allowed me to take action on projects that I had procrastinated for years due to a lack of time or that I just never imagined I would be able to do, all while spending less time on my business (especially the parts of it I hate doing).
Watch as Million-Dollar-Marketer Jeff Mills and I reveal the secret strategy to always taking action on your business in this free webinar:
